I guess vending machine at my work does not have those lasers.. If food is stuck you are fucked? I never thought learning about vending machines could be so intense? Yet it can't read my pristine dollar bill that I've put in every direction physically possible? Who else thought big guy was going to toss around the vending machine?? This looked so cool that I thought this was a sarcastic video for a second.? in my old school i used mexican 2 pesos coins and it accepted them as 25cents it was amazing then if i clicked return money i got 25 cents instead of a shitty 2 peso coin so with 8 pesos i got 1 dollar wich is like 17 pesos? It just says it has a part that does something then next step lasers next step magnets. How do these parts work? How do lasers detect coin size? How does the machine divert the coin into a specific hole? Frustrating to watch because it brings up more questions than it answers. The lasers can detect coin size by counting the amount of time the light is broken - smaller coins would break the light beam for a shorter period of time. As for how they divert the coin into a specific hole, once they know which coin it is, they can open the hole that they want. If the coin is big enough, it will not fall into a slot, or it might get ramped out (which is what the nickel seems to do) while smaller coins dont hit that ramp. The only weight involved here really is the use of gravity. "The only person allowed inside the vending machine has to pass through a series of security checks. First is voiceprint identification. Then, he has to put in a 6 digit code for the snack that he wants. That only gets him into the outer part of the machine. Next, he is positively identified by retinal scan. Finally, the security measures are only deactivated after insertion of a double electronic keycard... which we won't have. But for the lasers that mesure the coin size, wouldn't they have to take into account the velocity of the coins? And can't the velocity change depending on how you put the coin in the slot? I'm thinking a half inch coin going twice as fast as an inch coin would register as the same coin. This is exactly what I was thinking, some people may push the coins in harder than others. My guess is that below the slot is a flat surface where the coin falls on. Once steady and flat and velocity of 0, the surface slightly tilts to let the coin fall below to those detection lasers and electromagnets and whatnot. If you had two lasers it wouldn't matter how fast it was going. Magnets? How do they work? Around the nucleus of the atom there are electrons. Scientists used to think that they had circular orbits, but have discovered that things are much more complicated. Actually, the patterns of the electron within one of these orbitals takes into account Schroedingerâ€™s wave equations. Electrons occupy certain shells that surround the nucleus of the atom. Many people get lost here and just wonder about magnets instead of researching further. When you look at the ferromagnetic metals it is hard to see why they are so different form the elements next to them on the periodic table. It is generally accepted that ferromagnetic elements have large magnetic moments because of un-paired electrons in their outer orbitals. The spin of the electron is also thought to create a minute magnetic field. These fields have a compounding effect, so when you get a bunch of these fields together, they add up to bigger fields. To wrap things up on â€˜how do magnets work?â€™, the atoms of ferromagnetic materials tend to have their own magnetic field created by the electrons that orbit them. Small groups of atoms tend to orient themselves in the same direction. Each of these groups is called a magnetic domain. Each domain has its own north pole and south pole. When a piece of iron is not magnetized the domains will not be pointing in the same direction, but will be pointing in random directions canceling each other out and preventing the iron from having a north or south pole or being a magnet. If you introduce current(magnetic field), the domains will start to line up with the external magnetic field. The more current applied, the higher the number of aligned domains. As the external magnetic field becomes stronger, more and more of the domains will line up with it. There will be a point where all of the domains within the iron are aligned with the external magnetic field(saturation), no matter how much stronger the magnetic field is made. After the external magnetic field is removed, soft magnetic materials will revert to randomly oriented domains; however, hard magnetic materials will keep most of their domains aligned, creating a strong permanent magnet. If it gets an unlucky bounce it may be going too fast or slow such that the laser detects it as being the wrong size, perhaps? Lots of folks pointing out that the lasers can detect how long the beam is broken, but the lasers can also detect a difference in bounce back time. Basically, shine the laser across the chute, it reflects off of the opposite wall, and it takes a certain amount of time to come back. Likewise, when the laser strikes a coin, it takes a different amount of time to come back. With two lasers working in unison , you can take the two distances to the coin and the known distance between the lasers to determine the thickness of the coin, which is considerably more useful than the size of it. Older units just worked on size and were easily fooled. Newer ones less so. And to preempt the follow up question of "how does the reflector know whether the light is bouncing off of the coin or off of the opposite wall" the answer is patterns. Send the light out in a wave where it's on for a fraction of a second and then off for a fraction of a second, and you'll have a predictable pattern that the receiver expects to see. Put a coin in the way, and you'll disrupt the timing on that pattern, and you can figure out that something is in the way (and how long it's taking the light to bounce back) I worked in distance measurement with lasers, and I'm a little suspicious of claims that they're using TOF and other reflective properties given the very small tolerances, very wide range of acceptable coin conditions, and expense of good modules for doing all these things well. I'm not going as far as to say they don't... but if they are I think they must be weighing a number of variables with some hefty margins. Welcome to modern television. Well the laser would detect size based on how long the beam was broken for, and the coins go into specific holes based on size. The smallest holes are first, the largest last, so the first hole the coin fits into is the correct hole for that coin. The magnets I'm not sure about. Some sort of sensor that detects the disruption of the electromagnetic field? Maybe different metals affect that differently? Dunno. Seems overly complicated for such a low value purchase when a weight sensor could probably achieve the same. I was curious too. Source:20 years in vending, but it's been 13 years since I was in that industry, so things may have changed. EDIT: Now that I think about it, when I left the coin mechs had just one slot that would open if the coin was real, if not real then it would go past to the reject slot.
